We'll Never Stop This Train

"For who knows what is good for a man in life, during the few and meaningless days he passes through like a shadow? Who can tell him what will happen under the sun after he is gone?" Ecclesiastes 6:12

I received some sad news today. My mom called and informed me that my grandma passed away yesterday. I was at Starbuck's standing in line for the bathroom. It seems like the most frightening reality checks come at the most ordinary times.

A few weeks ago my mom and I were watching T.V. and she started complaining about her knees aching. She was having difficulty walking up the stairs. I almost burst into to tears. With every year that passes by, it seems that time is fading even faster. Part of me wants to grow up and see what life will be like in 10 years but sometimes I forget as I get older so do the people around me. And so do the people I love. I can't imagine my life without my mom. She makes these amazing chinese pancakes (cong you bing) and I don't know how to make them!! And her life before my existence is still a mystery.

Thinking about change is dangerous when there isn't a solid rock to rely on. But there is. There is something that lasts beyond my life. And that something loves me. I can't forget that.

"Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come...
the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it."--King Solomon (God's Word)

  1. "so scared of getting older
im only good at being young"

    but

"the circle of your friends will protect the silver lining"

which is that we will receive the strength and grace.

  2. if there's one thing I learned from reading Lord of the Rings in my Tolkien seminar this past semester, it's that change is necessary and in order to gain and grow, we must first lose. Yes, I know this is in the Bible as well. But it's fun to read in terms of hobbits, elves, orcs and whatnot.
